SiO_{2} + 2 C \to Si + 2 CO

This results in metallurgical grade silicon (MGS), which is about 98% pure. This form of silicon is used in alloys, aluminum casting, and some chemical applications.

3. Purification (for High-Purity Silicon)

If the silicon is intended for use in semiconductors or photovoltaic cells (solar panels), further purification is required. This is typically done through:

Chemical Purification: The metallurgical grade silicon is reacted with hydrogen chloride to form trichlorosilane (SiHCl₃).
Distillation: Impurities are removed by distilling the trichlorosilane.
Thermal Decomposition: The purified trichlorosilane is then decomposed at high temperatures (around 1100°C) in a hydrogen atmosphere to produce ultra-pure polycrystalline silicon (also known as electronic grade silicon or solar grade silicon).

4. Milling or Grinding into Powder

Once the silicon is produced in bulk form (either as metallurgical grade or high-purity silicon), it is processed into powder through:

Controlled Atmosphere Processing: To prevent oxidation or contamination, grinding is often done in an inert atmosphere (e.g., argon or nitrogen).
Particle Size Classification: The powder is sieved or classified using air classifiers to achieve the desired particle size distribution.

5. Surface Treatment and Passivation (Optional)

To improve stability and prevent reactions (especially oxidation), silicon powder may undergo surface treatments or passivation processes. This can involve coating the particles with protective layers or treating them with chemicals to reduce surface reactivity.
